The diagnosis of a child is a painful experience for a parent. This has to deal with the real image of his child, evidently different from the image of the ideal child-
After a first phase of shock and denial, conflicting feelings arise in the parents, such as anger, sadness and guilt.
This work aims to reflect, based on the experience gained at the Service of Child Neuropsychiatry of the Hospital Giuseppe Moscati of Avellino as a psychologist and trainee family psychotherapist, on the moods and emotions experienced by the family following the diagnosis of severe / chronic illness and on the role of the family psychotherapist in helping the family, in this critical phase of the life cycle, to develop internal resources to overcome the family crisis arising after receiving a psychopathological diagnosis of a child.
