Abstract

The presentation of this case aims to illustrate the process of individual systemic psychotherapy undertaken with Laura.

In the impossibility of enlarging the setting by involving the family, which lives in another region, it was proposed to assume a viewpoint that embraces complexity. Thereby, it is necessary to always bear in mind that the current situation is the result of ontological, relational, trigenerational family processes, which act simultaneously on different but coexisting levels. The perception of a person as a segment of a wider family system led to the hypothesis that it is a system with a transactional style characterised by entanglement, with diffuse and unclear boundaries.

The therapeutic relationship as allowed the establishment of a space for reflection and the creation of significant links. That has allowed Laura to start a process of differentiation from her family and to become aware of the effects that its process is generating, as a result, on the whole system.
