The risk of obesity in the immigrant population in Italy: a sample study

Abstract

Food is not only nutrition, it's also cultural identity of people that is handed down. Our study analyze the growing increase in bariatric surgery within migrants. Aims: To explore the cultural, clinical, social and psychological conditions during the psychological counseling, eating habits of immigrant foreign patients asking for bariatric surgery. Methods: 87 immigrants with severe obesity recruited from January 2016 to September 2019, they received a psychological evaluation to access surgery. Results: The severe obese immigrants have increased progressively from 16.1% to 25%. The original eating habits are partially maintained and handed down, integrated with the local diet. In all of them there was a ponderal increase since immigration and among comorbidities are: hypertension (55.5%), arthropathy (39%) and diabetes (27.7%). Conclusions: The results suggest to pay particular attention to cultural aspects related to feeding in the overweight immigrant population for the risk of becoming obese.
