Abstract

Cultural Family System Therapy (CFST) represents a fundamental evolution of systemic family therapy that integrates cultural awareness as a central element of the therapeutic process. This article examines the theoretical foundations of CFST, starting from Bowen's family systems theory and the contributions of authors such as Falicov, McGoldrick, and Krause. The approach recognizes that families operate within complex cultural contexts that profoundly influence relational dynamics and coping strategies. The work analyzes the competencies required of therapists, including awareness of their own cultural biases and cultural humility.

Clinical tools such as the cultural genogram and challenges related to working with immigrant and intercultural families are examined. The article emphasizes how CFST constitutes not only a clinical model but also an ethical commitment to equity in therapeutic practice.
