In the Italian penal code the social danger is defined as the attitude of a person to commit a crime or, if it has already been committed, the probability that the subject commits new crimes. The attribution of social danger to a subject is determined by the presence of various factors. Among these, our study particularly examines the family life conditions of subjects who have committed a crime, have been declared socially dangerous and condemned, as well as the prison sentence, to admission to a Psychiatric Hospital. An analysis of the role of the family appears interesting not only for predictive purposes but for the possible implications in terms of prevention, once identified in it the components of risk or some factors correlating with social danger. This study investigated the family structure of 200 male subjects admitted to a Judicial Psychiatric Hospital condemned for crimes but also affected by a psychiatric disorder. No one of the family variables was significant, except the number of family members. On the contrary, traumatic family events, as well as families with a deviant behiavour member, seemed to be predictive of criminal behavior.
